Drama - Explorers 10/1/2013

It is a major challenge to find educational activities for the portion of class that occurs during snack time.  My goal after the first class has been to engage the children in something a skill or thought process that can be applied to the focus for the rest of the class.

Today's focus was to use our imaginations in conjunction with our words and actions to be descriptive!

During snack we had the opportunity to observe 2 very different paintings.  The children talked about how they would describe them.  The first painting was "Starry Night" by Vincent van Gogh.  The other was a still life by Tomao.  Everyone used creative language and really surprised me with the details they came up with.  It was a neat segue into the activities for later on in class.

We took a little field trip up to the sanctuary for some practice with vocal projection and a few  activities.  While listening to music the children "painted" pictures.  We did this to 2 very different pieces of music.  Each child had an opportunity to hang their painting on the wall and describe them to the class.

We finished up the day with a Narrative Pantomime called, "A Tree Grows."  This activity took them from being a tiny seed planted in the ground through a grown tree producing fruit and on into the winter season.  This activity required a fair amount of attention and self control.  They did well!
